Equal Speaking Time for Adult Sessions
Some teachers might find that the client often complain about the distribution of time on each student is not equal in a session. Here are some tips for teachers to manage the time in adult group sessions: >> Find the right speaking balance; try not to talk too much >> Be aware of different levels in class and adapt questions accordingly >> Ensure regular student rotation >> Order the sequence of student rotation 1. Find the right speaking balance There is nothing wrong with teachers sharing their ideas, but we need to think of doing it in a brief manner and avoid doing it so consistent. It can reduce the students’ talking time. 2. Be aware of different levels in class and adapt questions accordingly Don’t ask overly complicated questions to weaker students. Be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of your students. A question can be overwhelming for a weaker student and exclude them; that is why some students complain that they don’t have equal speaking time. 3. Ensure regular student rotation Avoid spending too much time with one student. Asking a student to read a whole paragraph can take some time. If you ask a question to the same student again, that will make other students wonder when their turn will be. Try inviting one student to finish the paragraph and another student to answer the question. 4. Order the sequence of student rotation Keep track of when students last gave a comment. It is better that we can order a sequence of rotating the students (from the top to the bottom or from the bottom to the top). This way nobody is missing a turn. Speech Language in Junior Sessions
Speech is so important in classes. It helps the students have a better connection with the teacher. Here are several tips for using good speech in junior sessions: >> Use facial expression, intonation and TPR >> Slow down your pace and use the economy of words >> Use a questioning tone >> Use positive praise 1. Use facial expression, intonation and TPR The attention span of junior students is short. Combine your positive intonation, facial expression and TPR together to make the class active and more exciting to listen to. 2. Slow down your pace and use the economy of words When talking to young students, slow down your pace and ensure they can hear you clearly in order to follow you. 3. Use a questioning tone The questioning tone can sound more inviting for the students to answer your questions. It can also be used when correcting the students’ mistakes. 4. Positive praise Positive praise can encourage students to contribute more in class, like “Come on!” “I like that!” “Brilliant answer!” Click the video to learn more: https://s3cdn.pahx.com/con/cts/mp4/1607585405278.mp4

Teach with Passion
Passion is connected with our attitude: how we feel about the material and being excited to deliver the information with conviction to our students. Teaching with passion holds the student’s attention, and it helps students to recognize that this is important for them to learn. Here are three tips for teaching with passion: For juniors >> Be excited >> Have good eye contact >> Apply fun activities For adults >> Convey interests >> Listen to students patiently >> Acknowledge the student’s reply For juniors 1. Be excited Find something in the material that can create excitement in your class. Make learning interesting for kids. 2. Have good eye contact Looking and smiling at the camera can make the student think that you are paying full attention to them. 3. Apply fun activities We need to have energy with kids. Find some fun games that can help with learning and interaction. We would kindly suggest that every teacher prepare at least one listening or speaking game that can be applied in every junior session if it is needed. For adults 1. Convey interests Prepare and find something interesting in the topic or material that clients can relate to. Explain why we find that interesting and see if they think the same as us. 2. Listen to students patiently Adult students will have their own ideas and opinions. It is important to listen to what they say and express your interest in their ideas. Then, invite them to express themselves more. 3. Acknowledge the student’s reply We don’t want to disturb the student when they are expressing their ideas. We usually wait for the student to finish their answer, type out their answer, then give necessary correction. Be sure to give warm suggestion and encouragement. Time Management
Timing can be one of the most challenging parts of teaching. How to distribute the time on students and on the material can be very challenging, even for the most experienced teachers. Here are several tips for you: >> Be familiar with the material >> Follow the teaching guide >> Work with the student 1. Be familiar with the material Prepare before the session starts. You can see the student’s information and the material days before the session starts. There is a part called ‘Main Points’ in the teaching guide, which you may check as the main information for students to learn in the class. Also, make sure you know the learning objectives in every class, so that you can know what the students need to master after they finish this class. 2. Follow the teaching guide Pay attention to the number of pages in the material and suggested time on each section in the TG. Based on the suggestions on the TG, you may adapt your time a bit more or less in each section. But, doubling the teaching time or skipping some activities in the material is not suggested because that might affect the teaching results for students. 3. Work with the student Students have different language abilities. Some can learn very fast on new language, but others can be very slow. If the student is a fast learner, add more extension questions to them. If the student is slow in learning, slow down your speaking rate and pay more attention to their understanding. Typing Out When You Ask Students Questions or Want Them to Answer
Typing out your questions and the student’s answer can help most Asian learners understand structuring and listening, since they have better reading skills. Also, you can use the notes to correct the student’s mistakes and restructure the sentences. Here are some tips: >> Circle the mistake with the whiteboard tools >> Type out/restructure the correct sentence >> Concept checking questions 1. Circle the mistake with the whiteboard tools Type out the student’s answer and use the whiteboard tools to circle or highlight the key words or the pronunciation mistakes made by the student. That will make the student visually realize their mistakes. 2. Restructure the correct sentence After you typed out the student’s answer and the sentence structure is not formally organized, use the whiteboard to reorganize the sentence and practice it with the student. 3. Concept checking questions Understand the most important and basic teaching objective to reach in every session. Please check the student’s understanding after you asked them the question, and also check their understanding of the corresponding answer. Wrap Up Activities for Adults Classes
A good wrap up is as important as having a good beginning. Here are some tips for making a good wrap up: >> Review the client’s interests >> Use the pictures to review the key words 1. Review the client’s interest Use activities the client feels interested in and put the new language in the activity to review. 2. Use the pictures to review the key words Use the pictures that relate to the client’s hobby or interest to review the new language. People usually care more about themselves. If you use the pictures that the clients feel more interested in, they would talk more. Click the video to learn more: https://s3cdn.pahx.com/con/cts/mp4/1607586884145.mp4
